This sightseeing sweep through southern and southwestern England, sandwiched between low-season weekend visits to Liverpool and Manchester, began with an afternoon in Bristol. The original intention had been to visit the city's M Shed museum, but this plan came off the rails when I realised that, like so many other museums, this one was closed on Mondays. Plan B was a visit to Brunel's SS Great Britain, also located on Spike Island. This highly rated visitor attraction showcases the first iron steamship to cross the Atlantic, in the very dry dock in which she was built.
I walked to the historic ship's birthplace and final resting place via Castle Park and Queen Square, returning to Bristol City Centre by ferry. Other points of interest during my walk were vintage excursion ship MV Balmoral and the (closed) M Shed museum.
