Round The World and other travels

A frequent flyer's collection of trip diaries

This is: Northern Spain 2015

Background

Following on from the success of Bohemian Rhapsody in 2014, Bruce and I had planned a follow-up 'European week' to take place at the same time of year in 2015. The target area on this occasion was Northern Spain, featuring locations with a particularly strong sense of local culture and identity. In contrast to the Czech Republic, where that country's trains served us well, the nature of this journey suggested that it should be undertaken as a road trip.

The journey gets underway in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country and home of the Guggenheim Museum. We then visit San Sebastian for a two-night stay just 12 miles from the French border, in one of the world's great culinary destinations. On the road again, a lunchtime visit is made to Pamplona, with time to take in a few main sights before we continue to the Rioja wine-growing region for another two-night stay. Next we call at Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, before ending in Barcelona, capital of Catalonia and one of Europe's most vibrant and 'happening' destinations.
