The historic and relatively small city of Lübeck, inscribed in the UNESCO register of World Heritage Sites as the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, is situated in the southeastern corner of the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is around 70km northeast of Hamburg and easily accessible by train. I spent a night there as part of my May 2016 visit to Northern Germany and enjoyed entering the Old Town via the iconic and somewhat crooked Holstentor, then wandering through the medieval streets in warm spring sunshine.
