February 2005: Vienna
Vienna is one of my favourite places, but this was my first ever
winter visit to this most civilised of cities.
The Johann Strauss II memorial in the city
park, just across the street from the Hotel InterContinental
Wien.
The imposing and somewhat fanciful St Charles's church.
Perhaps not its most famous aspect, this is the facade
presented by the Hofburg Palace to the main shopping area of
the city centre. |
The Natural History Museum and its twin, the History of Art
Museum, look all the more impressive as cleaning work
progresses.
The NH museum again, with detail from the monument that sits
between the two great museums.
Part of the square in front of the city hall had been turned
into a public ice rink.
The famous Vienna City Hall, seen through some of the
temporary paraphernalia associated with the ice skating.
The striking Votive Church sits just outside the Ring at the
interestingly named Schottentor (Scots Gate).
In summertime, the suburb of Grinzing is famous for its
Heurigen - the original wine bars, without a yuppie in
sight!
The Belvedere Palace sits in splendid grounds ... most of
which were covered in snow!
Striking roof tiles on St Stephen's Cathedral
Trams on routes 1 and 2 travel endlessly
round the horseshoe-shaped Ringstraße, completing their
circuit on Franz-Josefs Kai.
Front view of the fabulous Schönbrunn palace. The snow did
nothing to deter the tourists!
Looking towards the Gloriette behind the Palace of
Schönbrunn. Where have all the flowers gone?!
