Exeter (population 125,000) was the third and final historic cathedral city on this little tour of southern and southwestern England. It is also the county town of Devon and lies on the River Exe, about 45 miles northeast of the county's largest city, Plymouth.
Exeter Cathedral, begun in the 12th century and completed in the year 1400, is situated in the heart of the modern city centre. Notable features of the building include an unusual minstrels' gallery, an astronomical clock, and what is believed to be the longest uninterrupted medieval vaulted ceiling in the world. Together with the pleasant open space of Cathedral Green, it forms the city's undisputed top attraction.
