Round The World and other travels

A frequent flyer's collection of trip diaries

This is: South America 2009

Background

Although this is a relatively short trip, I thought that my first ever visit to the continent of South America deserved to be given the full reporting treatment. The plot was hatched on Monday 05 May 2008, on the idyllic Caribbean island of Canouan, when my friend Bruce and I spent a lazy afternoon on the beach discussing options for a further joint-venture trip in a year's time. We settled on South America, with the accent on Argentina. We even got as far as planning a few days in Buenos Aires, followed by a visit to the famous Iguassu Falls, finishing up in either Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo, depending on award availability for a flight home. I booked my Lufthansa flights (as Diamond Club redemptions) a few weeks after returning home and, in so doing, established the Brazilian destination as Sao Paulo.

Much later, just a month prior to departure, Bruce came up with the idea of making a day trip from Buenos Aires across the river to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay, thus adding a third new country (for me) in this new continent.
