I started the day with another enjoyable breakfast in the hotel's main dining room, although it was noticeably busier and noisier than the previous day. As the weather seemed to be fine again, my objective for the morning was to fit in that visit to the Menara telecommunications tower that I'd missed out on the previous day because of the rapidly deteriorating weather. I found my way there very easily, but was grateful for the little free shuttle that they provided from the gatehouse up to the main entrance, as it was uphill all the way!
It was all very well organised and the views from the top were excellent, and very well described too. I noted in particular the area called Independence Square, which I thought looked well worth a visit. The only drawback was that it looked quite a distance away, and even at this stage I wondered whether I could be bothered messing about in the heat and humidity after I'd checked out of the hotel by 12 noon. I completed my visit to the tower at a leisurely pace, then returned to the hotel, packed and checked out just ahead of that 1200 deadline. I had a most enjoyable light lunch, finishing off with - you've guessed it! - a pot of Earl Grey tea As I'd more or less predicted earlier, when I considered the possibility of a taxi trip to Independence Square, I found that I just couldn't be bothered I therefore just lounged around until time for my taxi to the airport, feeling slightly guilty that I'd not really given the city my best shot. But I blamed it on the weather and immediately felt better about it
The airport proved to be spacious and quiet, so check-in was no problem at all. I had to take the Aerotrain to and from the satellite terminal because, although my flight was departing from the main terminal, the lounges are located in the satellite building.

The taxi transfer to the Crowne Plaza Karon Beach proved easy enough as, just like in KL, there was a pre-payment desk displaying the correct prices. No hassle ... suits me perfectly , as I detest the whole bargaining thing. It was quite a trek to the hotel and at times the road, to say nothing of the driving , was distinctly hair-raising. I think I spent just about the shortest time ever in the hotel lobby : one look at my Priority Club card and the agent said "We'll check you in in your room!" I'd booked a villa, and expected the transfer to be by electric cart. However this was Thailand, so I had my first ever ride in ... a tuk-tuk! It was a very strange experience, winding our way through the hotel's network of paths on a traditional, motorised tricycle!
