This is: Round Ireland (2016-20)
Today was a complete washout: the weather was simply appalling, exactly as
forecast. As if to emphasise the sudden stroke of bad luck that had
befallen the trip, it seemed that the far south of Ireland, together
with Cornwall, were the only parts of these islands affected by this
particular Atlantic storm.
In spite of the dreadful conditions, I actually went for a drive to
Kinsale to allow the maid get on with the cleaning. It was to have
been the first of several destinations planned for today. Conditions
were very poor, and at one point a fallen tree had only just been
moved to the side of the road, but I got there safely enough. I even took a couple
of photos without leaving the car, just to prove it. After retracing
the route, I had lunch at a surprisingly busy branch of Costa Coffee
in the industrial estate next to the hotel.
I got through the rest of this wasted day with the
help of some typical Sunday-afternoon TV, watching three
back-to-back Columbo films, although I must confess to falling
asleep during the second of these.
Dinner consisted of a bowl of Irish Stew in the
hotel bar. In contrast to the previous evening, this was a
blissfully quiet Sunday night to finish off my three-night stay on
the outskirts of Cork.
