Round The World and other travels

A frequent flyer's collection of trip diaries

This is: Chilling Out on Phu Quoc (2018)

Background

This jaunt was originally booked by Bruce as a solo adventure: he 'threw it out there' in my direction, but I initially declined, feeling the need to make more of an effort to keep my travel budget under control. Things changed when Lufthansa announced the closure of its UK credit card, regular use of which had been responsible for keeping my remaining Miles & More balance intact. Faced with a choice of either seeing my miles expire or spending them, I obviously chose to use them, and the clear way forward was to join my friend on a relaxing visit to the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc.

Bruce was already holding a five-night reservation for the aspirational JW Marriott Resort & Spa at Emerald Bay, built on the site of a former French university, and he had no difficulty getting this amended to provide a twin room. With Miles & More taking me to SE Asia, the journey home was achieved using the tried and tested technique of purchasing a one-way ticket with SriLankan Airlines.

As intended from the outset, this was a wonderfully relaxing and indulgent break coinciding with the onset of the European winter. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say that Lufthansa's action signified that my participation was simply meant to be, but I am delighted that following my original decision to pass on the opportunity, circumstances conspired to nudge me towards a change of mind.
