September 2010: Hilton Buenavista, Toledo

This excellent hotel combines comfortable bedrooms in a modern building with sumptuous public areas set in a 16th-century former palace. It may sound an improbable mix, but it works wonderfully well. The property is easy to find, on an edge-of-town site by the banks of the Tagus. It is a five-minute taxi ride from the Old Town and has direct, if somewhat distant, views of the historic area. The hotel has an outdoor pool, a spa and some attractive gardens, but by far the most memorable feature is the lobby bar which, with its air of grandeur and decorative glass ceiling, reminded me of the Westin Palace in Madrid.

One of the most pleasing design features of my bedroom was an inner door, separating the main part of the room from the vestibule area and thereby significantly reducing the risk of being disturbed by corridor noise. Every hotel room should have one!
