It's an RTWman first : a destination report that's not linked to any flights! This was an out of season mini-jaunt to a part of the UK that I used to know well, but hadn't visited in a long time. The weather was decidedly mixed : Wordsworth's celebrated daffodils were just about in evidence, but most of them hadn't yet flowered. Still, visiting in March did bring the considerable advantage of relatively quiet roads.
Perhaps oddly, very few of my photographs actually feature lakes! The theme of this visit seemed to be getting away from it all on narrow, winding roads and traversing spectacular mountain passes.
The Lake District includes parts of the three traditional counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. Since local government reorganisation in the 1970s, it has been wholly contained in Cumbria.
Only one lake in the area is officially a Lake : Bassenthwaite Lake. All the others are waters (e.g. Ullswater), meres (e.g. Windermere) or tarns (e.g. Easedale Tarn).
Base : Macdonald Swan Hotel, Grasmere
