Round The World and other travels

A frequent flyer's collection of trip diaries

October 2008 : Lisbon

The occasion: the third moreFlyingTalk 'away' Do; the destination: Lisbon. Not a new one for me, but the plan seemed to hit all the right notes and it didn't take much persuading to get me hooked on the idea. And what a superb weekend it proved to be, with good weather, an attractive destination and a chance to enjoy the company of some good friends all contributing to a truly memorable experience.

Central Lisbon

The weather brightened up beautifully to show the city centre at its best. A ride up to the Castelo de Sao Jorge on one of the rickety old trams was a must.

Belém

On Saturday afternoon, we travelled out to the riverside suburb of Belém on one of the sleek new trams, for some late lunch and a further bout of sight-seeing. The district is home to the world-famous Hieronymites Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), as well as a number of seafaring-related monuments and towers.

Cascais

On Sunday, we took a local train via Estoril to the pretty seaside town of Cascais to soak up some glorious autumn sunshine and enjoy an al fresco lunch. The excursion is incredibly good value at a fare of just EUR1.70 one-way.
