May 2012: Verona
Verona is situated in north-east Italy, about 125km west of Venice. It has been awarded UNESCO world heritage site status in recognition of its architecture and, although not on the same scale as its more famous eastern neighbour, it is also a popular tourist destination. It is best known for its Roman amphitheatre, the annual opera festival that takes place there, and as the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I found the old town area to be on a manageable scale, easily explored on foot and not overrun by visitors. Despite some mixed weather, I had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend there.
