This is: Vietnam 2010
Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) - Da Nang (DAD)
As we settled into 4H/K, it quickly became apparent that this wide-body aircraft had a much nicer and more spacious Business cabin than the A321, with a seating layout of 2+2+2 in four rows. A cold towel was offered by the cabin crew, followed by a choice of orange or apple juice as a pre-departure refreshment. I had the latter.
Pushback was at 1139 and was remarkable in that we ended up leaving prior to the delayed 0930 flight: the Boeing 777 operating that service was still on-stand to our right. There was an unexplained lengthy wait after pushback before we started our taxi. We couldn't help noticing that there were some VN cabin crew travelling as passengers and that, contrary to the instructions given to regular passengers, they were happy to leave their heavier cabin bags on the floor area in front of their seats.
We took off at 1155 and the seat belt signs were quickly switched off. In-flight catering on this short domestic flight consisted of a light snack and a beverage service of tea, coffee, soft drinks or beer. I had a diet coke and a cup of coffee. The ETA was given as 1250 with an expected temperature of 25C, which sounded far more comfortable than that to which we had recently become accustomed, except for the bit about "with light rain".
There was a final hot towels service (barely lukewarm, actually) after the trays had been cleared away. As we got closer to Da Nang, there was much evidence of the recent heavy rain that I had seen forecast in the lounge at Zurich on the first day of the trip. We landed at a near-deserted DAD at 1248, taxied past the new terminal still very much under construction, and parked at a remote stand.
