This is: USA Road Trip 2011
London Heathrow (LHR) - Edinburgh (EDI)
I was one of the first to board and didn't have far to walk: my seat allocation of 1A had managed to survive my drop in status from Gold to Silver. The high-capacity A321 took a while to fill up and as far as I could see, fill up is exactly what it did. We pushed back ten minutes late and started our long taxi from Gate A5 at Terminal 5 to the holding point for runway 27L - surely one of the longest ground journeys that an aircraft can make at Heathrow. Points of interest en route included an Emirates A380 and the construction work for the new Terminal 2. It was a relief to have a very short wait at the holding point and 18 minutes after leaving our gate, we were airborne and heading towards Windsor Castle.
In due course, the cabin service got underway and it was nice to be the first to be served. I asked for a coffee and a diet coke and these were presented along with a two-pack of Fox's Ambers biscuits. We followed the usual route via Manchester and Carlisle before making a rather bumpy approach out over the Firth of Forth. Touchdown came at 1443 and, despite the late departure from Heathrow, we managed a more or less on-time arrival.
It was a thoroughly routine shuttle flight - an experience that, these days, doesn't feel all that different from catching a bus.
