A brief stopover

When we arrived at Seoul Incheon International Airport, the time was already approaching 1pm in the afternoon of a new day. I had been advised in Frankfurt that, as a first-class passenger, I would have my case wrapped in yellow plastic. Sure enough it appeared on the carousel in this attention-seeking garb, causing people to jump to my assistance! We took the shuttle bus to the nearby Hyatt Regency hotel and checked in for our one-night stay.

A short stroll around the immediate area seemed in order, in an attempt to let the chilly breeze blow away the mental cobwebs created by jetlag. As expected, our surroundings had an uninspiring, business-park feel. Seeing the Best Western hotel that I had stayed in six months previously, I pondered that it felt odd to have visited South Korea twice and never to have been further than a mile from the airport - a situation that would, of course, be put to rights in the near future. It was also interesting to see the new monorail system apparently nearing completion.

In order to avoid the possibility of falling asleep on our feet, we decided to have a late afternoon snooze, with the alarm set to ensure that this would last no longer than two hours.

With the benefit of a light sleep allowing us to keep going a little longer, we had a couple of nicely made Manhattan cocktails in the lobby bar, followed by a room service dinner. I had the old favourite Nasi Goreng, which was rather disappointing on this occasion. Bruce, on the other hand, had Mee Goreng, which looked altogether nicer. Bah!
