This is: Shanghaied in Tuscany!
Palma de Mallorca (PMI) - London Gatwick (LGW)
As I made myself at home in Seat 1F of Boeing 737-400 G-DOCO, I was surprised to see that the Club Europe cabin consisted of eight (well, seven and a half!) rows, all fairly full. When I'd spotted the cabin size at OLCI, I'd wrongly assumed that it must be for trim purposes. Boarding was orderly and we were able to get away a couple of minutes early, taking off towards the north-east at exactly ten o'clock.
Cabin service began with a drinks run and, all too predictably, I had Champagne and some water. When the crew member deployed the 1E table, I asked to have my jacket hung. It was occupying the seat and I didn't want to risk any spillages. An announcement from the flight deck confirmed our routing as being via Barcelona, across the Pyrenees, flying between Toulouse and Biarritz, over Bordeaux and passing to the west of Paris, mostly at 34,000ft. The meal choice was either Mozzarella salad or seared salmon; I chose the latter. It was served with potatoes, carrot strips and a slightly unusual mustard sauce. Also on the tray was a little chocolate cheesecake and custard, and hard and soft cheeses served with grapes and Walker's oatcakes. The usual selection of bread rolls was offered and I drank some New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (Chardonnay was also offered), finishing off with a coffee. Despite the recent catering upheavals at BA, this was classic Club Europe fare and I really enjoyed it.
I fell asleep after that! The 'bing' of the seat belt signs woke me up and I made sure I was ready for landing. We touched down just after 11 and were on-stand some seven minutes later.
Although this was an enjoyable experience, I can't end without one minor gripe. I used a Lufthansa cold towel to freshen up. I miss my hot towel, BA!
