This is: Roaming the Rust Belt (2017)

The Golden State beckons

ABOVE and LEFT: Arrival at Sacramento

With an 0740 departure out of Detroit Metro Airport on the first part of a two-leg journey to Sacramento, California, it was a particularly early start for me. I took an airport shuttle bus to the North terminal, marvelling at the sheer size of DTW and thinking that physically, it must be one of the largest airports in the world. The two sections of my subsequent journey westwards are covered in the 'Flights' section, accessible using the black menu bar above.

I eventually arrived early into Sacramento and effortlessly picked up my next rental car, a black Ford Focus registered in Oregon. I drove to Old Sacramento, parked and had a wander around this popular (if somewhat tacky) historical area.

The highlight was renewing my acquaintance with the California State Railroad Museum, first visited by me in 2006.

Later, I drove to Roseville and checked in at the Hilton Garden Inn. This seemed quite basic-looking for a Garden Inn, and there were too many 'loud' guests for my liking. Still, none of the noisy crowd were located near me, and my usual technique of turning up the fan on the air-conditioning unit was able to mask extraneous noise and allow me to get a good night's sleep. The three-hour time difference from the Rust Belt obviously helped too.
