Flight Log 9 : SQ192

Singapore (SIN) - Penang (PEN)

As I settled into 16A, in the rear corner of the Business Class cabin, I was immediately delighted by the space available, the quality of the seats and other fittings, and the spotless cabin presentation. The cabin filled up quickly, leaving very few gaps indeed in the five rows of 2+2+2 seats. For pre-departure drinks, a selection of fruit juices and water was offered; I had apple. There was a hot towels service (good quality & nicely scented) before the doors were closed and we pushed back, a little ahead of schedule, at 0802.

A slightly worrying moment occurred when we taxied to a holding position to, in the Captain's words, "sort out some communication problems". Thankfully, it only took two or three minutes to put things right and we continued our taxi to Runway 02C for an 0828 take-off.

The breakfast menu was as follows :-

BREAKFAST

A choice of apple, tomato, or freshly-squeezed orange juice, or soya bean milk

A selection of fresh fruit

Fried spicy rice vermicelli with prawns, fish cake, hard-boiled egg, chives and lime
or
French toast with maple syrup, chicken chipolata, mushrooms and roasted tomatoes

Coffee / tea

Service started with me, then moving forward and back down the other aisle. I had the western option, although I only had a little splash of the maple syrup. It was a beautifully presented tray, but strangely, there was no bread whatsoever (apart from the French toast). This seemed distinctly odd! My neighbour's oriental option smelled absolutely revolting. (I generally enjoy a wide range of foods, but am notoriously unadventurous at breakfast time!)

A second round of hot towels accompanied our initial descent into PEN, where we touched down at 0925 and parked on-stand just a minute down by my watch.

This was only my second-ever flight on Singapore Airlines, the first having been an Economy SIN-HKG flight as far back as 1986. And the verdict on this short sector? Hard product : excellent. Food : good in terms of quantity and quality. Service : superb. In summary, this had quality written all over it.
