Flight Log 7: AM2442

Mexico City (MEX) - Campeche (CPE)

After the shambles of Terminal 2 and the ludicrously short yet utterly chaotic bus transfer, it was a relief to be finally aboard. Rather than sit together in the cramped double seats, we had opted for single seats on the 'A' side, one in front of the other. I was in 7A, with Bruce directly behind in 8A. With the bmi Regional fleet composed entirely of Embraer RJ145s and 135s, it was familiar territory for me and I had always maintained that once you are settled into a solo 'A' seat, these little aircraft provide a remarkably civilised experience on a short flight. Bruce wasn't convinced to the same degree, eventually conceding that the Embraers were "the best of the worst".

We finally got underway 18 minutes late, made the short taxi to 05R and took off at 1649 after an exceptionally long run necessitated by the high altitude and thin air. It was quite bumpy initially, the seat belt signs remaining on for at least ten minutes. Cabin service started from the back. When the flight attendant finally reached us, I had an apple juice with ice and some Japanese-style cracker peanuts.

In due course, after a long spell overflying the Gulf of Mexico, we crossed the coast of the Yucatan peninsula and made a sharp turn to the left to line up quite late for the runway at CPE, touching down at 1811. A U-turn was needed at the end of the runway and we partially retraced our path to pull up at the very quiet, and obviously quite new, terminal building.
