This is: Amtrak Adventure 2019
Following another Starbucks breakfast, we set out and walked a little over a mile to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) on South Grand Avenue. It seemed as if we were really packing in the museum visits on this trip, but once again I really enjoyed the exhibits. On the other side of South Grand Avenue, another contemporary art museum was visible. This one was known as The Broad (after its principal benefactors), but any review of its contents would have to wait for another time. Across W 2nd St was the Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by Frank Gehry. It has been home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the main part of the season since 2003. (Its summer base is, of course, the Hollywood Bowl.)
Turning right into W 2nd St and going downhill, we caught sight of Los Angeles City Hall and kept walking, more or less in a straight line, until we reached Little Tokyo. Strangely, I had never even heard of this Japanese enclave before! But for two fans of Japanese culture and food, it certainly made for the perfect lunch stop, and I was soon enjoying miso soup and eel with rice.
Staying within Little Tokyo just a little longer, we called in at The Geffen, which seemed to be a kind of 'overflow' site for MOCA. We finished off the afternoon by calling at two venues with something in common: we had jointly visited both places on 31 December 2011, before boarding the Southwest Chief for New Mexico. These locations were Grand Central Market and Pershing Square. At this point, we contemplated the surprising fact that everything we had done so far today in the City of Angels had been achieved entirely on foot - and we still had about a mile to go.
After a spell of relaxation back at base, we took a Lyft to Koreatown for a superb Korean barbecue dinner at Park's BBQ. This was one of those places where the food is cooked on your table-top. It made for quite an experience, although I think we probably over-ordered. While this was the final meal of our joint trip, for each of us individually the journey was far from being over. But we would be going our separate ways the following morning.
