Dumfries and Galloway is the council area covering southwest Scotland. Its neighbours are South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, the Scottish Borders and the English county of Cumbria. The area also has a substantial southern coastline on the Solway Firth. I made a three-day road trip to the region starting on Easter Monday, where that time included travel from Edinburgh and back. Places visited included Wanlockhead, the Mennock Pass, Drumlanrig Castle, Threave, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Whithorn Priory, Kippford, Rockcliffe, Sweetheart Abbey and Caerlaverock Castle - not bad for the time available. The total distance driven was 378 miles and at no stage was I expected to pay for parking!
