Hillerød is a town on the Danish island of Zealand (Danish: Sjælland). Lying approximately 38km northwest of Copenhagen, it is connected to the capital by the S-Bana suburban rail system. Hillerød's main attraction is Frederiksborg Castle, a former royal palace in the Renaissance style set in magnificent grounds. The building has housed the Museum of Danish National History since 1882.
I visited Frederiksborg Castle as a child during my first venture overseas, and prior to this 2015 trip, it was the only place on my itinerary all those years ago to which I had never returned. Perhaps not surprisingly after all that time, there were only a few fleeting fragments of the place that seemed vaguely familiar.
