Opened in 1996, this award-winning property enjoys an unrivalled oceanfront location in Key West's historic old town. It must have been a huge investment for Westin, as the complex is a major undertaking that extends well beyond the normal limits of a hotel to include a marina, shops, public walkways, a public parking garage and a cruise ship terminal that is one of the largest private ports in the United States. Additionally, Westin has another, cottage-based resort on nearby Sunset Key, and it operates a 24-hour ferry link from the hotel in Key West.
The hotel was first-rate in all respects. I had a second-floor room overlooking a busy oceanfront public walkway, yet the build quality was such that no extraneous noise invaded my little haven of air-conditioned tranquility. The room was nicely furnished and the bed fully lived up to its Heavenly name. Food was invariably excellent, whether served in the restaurant or delivered to the room. A very nice feature was the Sunset Deck, an outdoor bar that opened for just a couple of hours each evening leading up to this greatly celebrated Key West event.
