December 2009 : Vienna
As I have probably said in these pages already, Vienna is one of my favourite cities in the world and may quite possibly top the list. When the opportunity arose to join a small group of frequent-flyer friends on a Christmas Market Do, absolutely no arm-twisting was required!
Schönbrunn
On Sunday morning, I made the short trip out to the familiar grounds of Schönbrunn Palace, formerly a summer retreat of the imperial Habsburg family and now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vienna. Although the building and gardens undoubtedly look their very best in summer, they still managed to be stunning with snowflakes blowing in the wind! Yet another Christmas market had been set up in the front courtyard.
Christmas Markets
While Vienna's main Christmas Market had the impressive setting of the Rathausplatz, smaller versions cropped up in almost every significant public space.
