August 2009 : Lyon
Lyon, France's second city, is situated towards the east of the country, at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. It lies between Paris and Marseille, but is much closer to Geneva. While a large part of the central area has World Heritage Site status, perhaps the city's greatest claim to fame lies not so much in its historic and visual attractions, strong though these undoubtedly are, but rather in its position as France's culinary capital.
Lyon had been on my wish-list for quite some time, so when frequent flyer friend Greg told me that he had booked a weekend jaunt and asked if I'd like to come along, it was a no-brainer. We had a thoroughly enjoyable, though all too short, visit and managed to see a reasonable amount in spite of the punishing 35C summer heat. An excellent public transport system made getting around the city a breeze.
Fourvière
We began our explorations in the hilltop area of Fourvière, which overlooks both the Old Town and the modern city centre. Apart from the view, the hill is best known as home to the Fourvière Basilica.

Cité Internationale
Our hotel was part of the modern, multi-functional Cité Internationale development, by Italian architect Renzo Piano. The development lies between the Parc de la Tête d'Or and the Rhône, adjacent to the Contemporary Art Museum. A covered pedestrian concourse forms its backbone.
