The Fortress Resort & Spa, Koggala

The Fortress is a modern and upmarket beach resort situated at Koggala, some 15km east of historic Galle. Arrival is quite an experience: the doorman rings a large bell and staff come scurrying from all directions to relieve you of luggage, present a cold towel, offer a welcome drink and show you to Reception. The property was built in 2006, but is inspired by the Dutch Fort in Galle. The infinity pool immediately behind Reception is a most attractive feature.

I was given a double upgrade from a Fortress Room to a Beach Room on the grounds that it was off-season and some of the rooms were being renovated. Room 14 featured a split-level design, a large open-plan bathroom and a small balcony area. In addition to an ocean view, there were soothing ocean sound effects - particularly nice to fall asleep to and to hear again on waking up. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and indulgent little touches were certainly evident in my room: a flat-screen TV with Bose sound system, iPod docking station, Nespresso coffee machine, Jacuzzi bath and high-end bathroom amenities, to name but a few.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel, which was one of the highlights of the trip.
