Hotel 3

The Inn at Middleton Place, near Charleston

We altered our plans just a couple of weeks prior to departure to include this hotel on the basis that it made good financial sense, with the rate including accommodation, breakfast and the otherwise expensive admission fee to the grounds and museum of Middleton Place itself. The award-winning architectural design of the hotel dates from 1985 and, at the risk of sounding obsessed with this notion, it once again reminded me in certain respects of being at a National Park lodge.

Our room wasn't easy to access with luggage in tow. The internal design featured lots of wood, a huge bathtub and a wood-burning fireplace for cooler times of year. Power points were in short supply and not conveniently located. Most unusually for North America, our twin room contained a pair of narrow, European-style single beds.

Breakfast was presented in the building used for corporate events and featured an attractive 'healthy start' buffet supplemented by chargeable cooked-to-order items. An early-evening Manager's Reception proved to be a popular event. Dinner involved a somewhat longer stroll to the Middleton Place restaurant - see diary entry for 21 May for details.

Overall, we had no regrets about staying here as the original rationale for the decision was sound. However there were one or two details where we found ourselves commenting: "that wouldn't happen in a major chain".
