Hacienda Uayamon, Uayamon, Campeche
The Hacienda Uayamon is a sister hotel of the Hacienda Puerta Campeche; both belong to the same local group of five acquired by Starwood for their Luxury Collection brand. Although less than an hour away from Campeche, it's important to realise that this one is located in the middle of nowhere, the grounds having been hacked out of the Mexican jungle. No-one making their way from their room to the pool or the restaurant should be surprised to encounter lizards and iguanas scurrying through the undergrowth, and we decided that it would be good practice to spray a defensive line of insect repellent under the front door and the door leading to the bathroom corridor, prior to retiring for the night.
Having said all that, this is another fabulous and exclusive property, set in a restored 19th Century hacienda. All of the accommodation is in the form of villas and all are designated as either junior suites or suites. Our junior suite had a reasonably spacious twin bedroom / living room linked by a corridor to a luxurious bathroom that was in effect a separate building. Off to one side was our own private gazebo for lounging in, although in the event we never got around to using it.
The pool, spectacularly located in the remains of what looked like a large public room or hall, was good enough even to tempt a confirmed landlubber such as myself. The grounds contain some interesting ruins, as well as more conventional facilities such as a spa, bar and restaurant.

More pictures of this property, which should be considered a destination in its own right, can be found in the diary entries for Friday 27 May and Saturday 28 May. Once again, very highly recommended for those who crave a bit of peace and solitude!
